<現在分詞の位置>
現在分詞が1語の場合は修飾する名詞の前に置くが、目的語や副詞(句)を伴う現在分詞の場合は修飾する名詞の後に置く。

He is a sleeping baby.
彼は眠っている赤ちゃんです。

He is a baby sleeping in the cradle.
彼はゆりかごで眠っている赤ちゃんです。

どちらも名詞を修飾する。動名詞の形容詞用法は名詞の「用途や目的」を表す。一方、現在分詞の形容詞用法は名詞の「状態や性質」を表す。

This is a smoking room.
こちらが喫煙室です(動名詞)。

There is a smoking gun.
煙が出ている銃がある(現在名詞)。

<動名詞の形容詞化>
日本語と同じように英語も「名詞+名詞」ように名詞が連続して並ぶと前の名詞が形容詞化して後の名詞を修飾します。これは「動名詞+名詞」にもあてはまります。

chewing gum   チューイングガム
teaching job   教える仕事
driving school  自動車教習所

その本は読まれた形跡がなかった。

in addition to       に加えて
