＜強調構文＞
「It is ... that 〜」の「...」の部分に名詞や副詞を置いて「〜なのは”...”です」と「...」を強調して述べる文を「強調構文」と呼びます。

John saw Tom yesterday.

It was John that saw Tom yesterday.
トムに昨日、会ったのはジョンだ。

It was Tom that John saw yesterday.
ジョンが昨日、会ったのはトムだった。

It was yesterday that John saw Tom.
ジョンがトムに会ったのは昨日だった。

347「It ... that節」の構文

It is natural that we shoud work for our family.

Are you afraid of insects ?

He is one of gangsters.

She thought nothing of her parents.

It is not good to resort to violence to resolve disputes.

＜動詞の原形を使えない場合＞
現在の事実を表す場合は動詞の原形やshouldを用いることはできません。しかし上記の例でshouldを使っているのは「そうであってしかるべき」、当然だという意味で用いています。shouldを用いるのは主としてイギリス英語でアメリカ英語ではwouldを用いるのが一般的です。

Bureaucrats stopped arguing.

It is desirable if not essential that you be study every day.

＜if ... thatの構文＞
「要求・命令・提案・依頼」の動詞が導くthat節は「動詞の原形」や「shoud+動詞の原形」が用いられます。

この時用いられる形容詞は以下のようなものです。

necessary　　必要だ
essential　　必要不可欠だ
urgent　　　　すぐに必要だ
important　　重要だ
vital　　　　　　とても重要だ
desirable　　望ましい

that節の内容が「〜である」、「〜であった」、「(将来)〜になる」と事実や予想を述べる場合は「動詞の原形」や「should」を用いることはできません。

また一般にthat節中の現在形は現在の(習慣的な)事実を表すために現在の事実ではなく仮定的な状況を述べている場合は「現在形のthat節」ではなく「to不定詞」で表します。
